Cloud computing is taking the world of business IT by storm. Everyone is talking about moving their business information to the Cloud. But what does it mean, exactly? Generally, the Cloud refers to data storage and software applications delivered over the Internet. This is not a new concept. Many of us use Gmail, Flickr, or FaceBook to manage personal data. Business applications, such as SalesForce and Replicon have been around for years.

Information and data are growing at a frightening rate. Individuals and organisations are creating, collecting and communicating content at lightning speed. Will we drown in the deluge? Or learn to surf the tsunami? Too much information equals greater risk that it will be misused or end up where it shouldn't be. It’s difficult to manage (takes time, costs money) and is generally useless if you can't find what you need. On the plus side, there is a wealth of potential benefits dissolved in this ocean of data.

Those of us living in the hurricane belt are well-aware of the potential hazards a storm can bring. For a business, damage to property, paper records, digital data and disruption to overall business activity are very real possibilities. The most likely concerns are water damage and communications failure, both of which are fairly easy to avoid with proper storage and reliable backup procedures.
